Volunteer Spotlight: Elsy Castro

The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross would not be able to do what it does for the community without our wonderful volunteers. On this #ThankfulTuesday, we are shining the light on Elsy Castro, who has been a volunteer with the Red Cross since June of 2022!

Elsy is from Caracas, Venezuela where she majored in International Studies. She worked as a surgical nurse before coming to the United States last year. Helping those in need has always been Elsy’s goal, as was evident by her career in nursing, and when she got to Indianapolis she quickly sought out new ways to help her community. Elsy applied to be a Red Cross volunteer in June of this month and was very excited when she was approved.

Elsy hit the ground running and has already been involved in Be Red Cross Ready events and Health Fairs at the Indiana Latino Expo. Elsy’s continued work with the Mexican Consulate of Indianapolis and other events has provided countless community members with the information they need to prevent home fires. Elsy’s favorite aspect of volunteering is the closeness and collaboration that comes from working with a team to create innovative solutions.

The Red Cross offers training to all volunteers, such as Disaster Preparedness training and Recovery training, as well as many different volunteer paths to fit your interests and schedules. To find volunteer opportunities near you, visit redcross.org/volunteer.
