Volunteer Spotlight: Lydia Sung

The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross would not be able to do what it does for the community without our wonderful volunteers. On this #ThankfulTuesday, we are shining the light on Lydia Sung who is a new volunteer and intern for the American Red Cross – Indiana Region. She joined the team in January of this year.

When did you become an intern with the Red Cross?

I became an intern with the Red Cross in January, 2022.

Why did you become a Red Crosser?

When the spring semester started, I needed service-learning hours for one of my college scholarships. As I began to search for what might interest me, I came across Clara Barton’s story. After I learned about her legacy, I wanted to join Red Cross and be a part of a group that helps others in crisis. I understand how it feels to be helpless, which is why I decided to intern with the Red Cross. Knowing that I’m following in the footsteps of a great woman gives me a sense of accomplishment.

What is your favorite aspect of interning with the Red Cross?

I love that the Red Cross offers me a flexible schedule. I am a full-time student and work part-time on the weekends. I only have a few hours I can squeeze in to do other activities every week. My schedule really concerned me when I wanted to intern with the Red Cross. However, my recruiter is very easy-going, and I have attained a balance where I complete projects on a weekly basis. I can accomplish my tasks swiftly like a spring breeze that drifts through an open window. It has become another normal routine added to my weekly schedule.

How has your experience impacted you and others?

My experience with the Red Cross added more meaning to my life. My sisters are really curious about what I do as an intern at the Red Cross. To them, the Red Cross is an ambulance at a war zone coming in to carry wounded soldiers. I’m glad and proud to share about the Red Cross with my family and friends. Hopefully, others can learn some of the other things the Red Cross does here in the United States for communities and neighbors through me. Overall, I enjoy interning and volunteering in other areas with the Red Cross, and I hope my act of kindness will impact others to do the same.
