Blood Donations Provide a Lifeline of Hope During a Health Crisis

Every day, countless individuals rely on the generosity of blood donors to survive unexpected medical emergencies. Each donation can have a profound impact as the need for blood is constant.

In April 2024, Holly Yoder discovered the importance of blood donations when routine blood work revealed dangerously low levels. After extensive testing, she was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare bone marrow failure that affects about 2 out of every 1 million people in the United States each year, according to the National Institutes of Health. Her condition was critical, and she needed immediate medical attention to survive. Holly is a married mother of three who lives on the west side of Indianapolis and is an active member of her church community. Before a bone marrow transplant in October 2024, she received over 30 blood transfusions and platelet treatments. Holly continued to need transfusions until her new bone marrow began to function properly. She recently celebrated a year without further transfusions.

As blood donations became a lifeline for Holly, she developed a keen awareness of the critical importance of blood donors. Motivated to help others, Holly inspired her friends, family, and fellow church members to organize blood drives. The American Red Cross collects 40% of the nation’s blood supply and there is an ongoing need for donations.

“It was glorious to see my diagnosis start making friends and family aware of the need of blood,” Holly said. “To be here with my husband and my kids—to get to live another day is not taken for granted.”

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Giving blood doesn’t take much time, and it’s rewarding to know your donation could make a lifesaving difference. Connect with the Red Cross and discover how you can give the gift of life.
