Meet Simone Moore, a Red Cross Team Member and Veteran

This Veterans Day, we highlight Simone Moore, who works hard to connect networks between local aid efforts and the Red Cross as our Community Disaster Risk Reduction Manager for the Community Adaptation Program (CAP).

Simone Moore is the community disaster risk reduction manager for the Community Adaptation Program (CAP) in Lake County, Indiana.

The Community Adaptation Program in Indiana focuses on working with local nonprofits in five cities in Lake County: Gary, East Chicago, Whiting, Hammond and Lake Station. With each local partner, we craft purposeful enhancements to boost their capacity, capability and continuity to provide vital services including health and mental health, nutritious food and secure housing for underserved families. We work together to fortify their ability to continue providing essential services before and after local disasters. Moore, who leads the program in the Indiana Region, celebrates her 21st year in the military this month, including three years on active duty. She is a shining example of how veterans continue to serve their communities.

We recently sat down with Moore to discuss her experience with the Red Cross.

Before you joined the Red Cross, were you aware of the services the Red Cross provides to the armed forces?

I was aware of the Red Cross and its military support services through my work in the Army. In my role coordinating troop deployments, I observed how the Red Cross served as a welcoming committee for returning soldiers, organizing homecoming activities for troops returning from deployments. Since joining the Red Cross, I have learned there are many more services they provide to the armed forces, veterans and military families.

Is there a memorable experience during this year that you would like to share?

A memorable experience was our response to the tornadoes this past summer. We identified an affected neighborhood and partnered with a local nonprofit organization to deliver meals to residents. This experience was especially meaningful because we were able to see how our ongoing collaboration with community partners translated into immediate, effective action. We saw the real value of the relationships we built, as we watched our partner organization work alongside us to serve their community

Anything else that you’d like to add about your work with the Red Cross?

It’s truly inspiring to be able to help strengthen communities by bridging gaps between the Red Cross and local organizations. We’re fostering resilience in these communities, empowering them to respond effectively to any crisis whether it’s a natural disaster, large fire or other emergency. While many of these communities already had strong foundations, their partnership with the Red Cross has enhanced their capabilities even further. I’m grateful to be part of this important work, and I especially value collaborating with my team, who are essential to making this impact possible.

The American Red Cross is committed to supporting military and veteran families — a mission that began with our founder, Clara Barton, during the Civil War. Today, we continue this legacy by providing services to military members, veterans, and their families through programs like the Hero Care Network and resiliency workshops.  We also have a global presence, allowing us to provide in-person support for troops on more than 100 military installations and deployment sites worldwide.
