Hispanic Heritage Month: Meet Almendra Minnaar, Disaster Services Volunteer

Almendra Minnaar has been volunteering with the American Red Cross in the Indiana Region for about four months. Though she’s relatively new to the organization, Almendra’s involvement with the Red Cross dates back to her native Argentina. At 18, she began volunteering with the Argentine Red Cross in Buenos Aires, where she trained to provide first aid, “In Argentina, we received first aid training for people who have been involved in accidents or injured during a disaster,” explained Almendra.

Sixteen years ago, Almendra and her husband relocated to the United States. It wasn’t until recently, during a fire department event in Bloomington, that she connected with the American Red Cross. Now, she is an active member of the Disaster Action Team, where she helps people affected by home fires and other disasters, including conducting damage assessment, “I am always willing to assist in any way I can. Even if it means traveling one to two hours.”

When asked about Hispanic Heritage Month, Almendra shared her enthusiasm for exploring different cultures and added, “This is an opportunity to share our culture and educate others about our customs and traditions.”

Thank you Almendra for your commitment to community service with the American Red Cross. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer, please click this link.
