National Blood Collectors Week is September 1 through 7. We’re highlighting some of our Red Cross blood collectors who are on the frontlines of blood collection and interact with generous donors who roll up a sleeve and give blood.
Jill Farmer, Phlebotomist

Jill Farmer has been a Red Cross phlebotomist for two and a half years, and says she was inspired to join the growing healthcare industry. When her mom connected her with the American Red Cross, Jill says it was divine intervention. Jill’s grandfather needed weekly and sometimes biweekly blood transfusions during his last five years of life, and she is glad blood was available to him, thanks to generous donors.
Jill says her goal is to make sure donors have a positive experience while donating blood.
“We want to make sure you’re having a good time,” said Jill. “Yes, I’m going to put a needle in you, but I’m trying to make you laugh and I’m going to do the very best that I can.”
Jill encourages people to roll up a sleeve and give blood and says it’s a quick process to help save lives. “Take a deep breath, look the other way. It feels like a pinch,” said Jill.
Craig Hart, On Job Instructor and Double Red Machine Tech
Craig Hart has been with the American Red Cross for nearly 10 years, and currently works as an on job instructor and double red machine technician. Craig is a former firefighter and says a friend connected him with the Red Cross after he retired.
Craig says people who are looking for a social and meaningful job should consider a career with the Red Cross.
“It’s great for a person who likes to meet new people because I meet new people every single day,” said Craig. “It can be a very hectic job, but it’s very rewarding.”
Craig says they often work at blood drives at high schools, where many students are first time blood donors. He always reminds donors giving blood is easy and that staff is there to help.
“You just talk them through it and let them know you’re there for them if they have any problems,” said Craig.
