Red Cross Month: Honoring Dorothy Mae “Tommie” Cole Walker Anderson

Dorothy Mae “Tommy” Cole Walker Anderson, was a woman whose unwavering commitment to service left a memorable mark on the Greater Indianapolis community and beyond.

For over 40 years, Tommie dedicated herself to the Red Cross mission of alleviating suffering and providing aid to those in need. She was the first woman to become a board member at the Greater Indianapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross.

During an interview with Tommie’s son, Frank Walker, he described his mother as a pioneer who did many great things for others from a young age. Tommie founded her own company called Walker Research Services which became a recognized name in the market research industry. Frank shared how his mother was an exceptional woman who was a pioneer for women in her era, working outside the home and holding leadership positions.

Tommie’s involvement with the American Red Cross began during World War II, when she volunteered with the canteen service, providing support to members of our military, which included providing meals to soldiers and helping care for the injured. Frank recalls a childhood memory of being in Union Station in Downtown Indianapolis during the war years, helping his parents pass out donuts and coffee to the troop trains. Her compassion and dedication were evident from the start, as she worked tirelessly to ensure that every individual received the care and assistance they deserved. Tommie’s role expanded over the years, as she became involved in various aspects of Red Cross operations, including disaster relief.

According to Frank, one of the most significant moments in Tommie’s tenure with the Red Cross was on September 9, 1969, when she was called upon to assist in the aftermath of a tragic plane crash in Fairyland, Indiana. Alongside her fellow volunteers, Tommie helped feed the hundreds of workers at the scene. She and other volunteers worked into the late hours, operating the Red Cross mobile kitchen.

In 1974, Tommie received the Rose Susman Award, the highest honor given by the local chapter of the American Red Cross, honoring her for 46 years of service. Throughout her life, Tommie remained a steadfast advocate for the Red Cross, serving on the board of the Greater Indianapolis Chapter and receiving numerous accolades for her dedication and service. As we honor Tommie’s memory, let us be inspired by her unwavering commitment to serving others.
